Observation Deck and architectural crown on top of new East River Street hotel
At the eastern end of River Street, near the Savannah Marriott Riverfront, a new 8 story hotel has been approved, according to Savannah Morning News. The branding has not been released, although the Atlanta developer of the project, North Point Hospitality Group, recently opened Midtown Atlanta’s dual-branded Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites by Hilton at 10th Street near the Connector. The brick and limestone hotel will be topped by a signature crown which will allow visitors a view of the Savannah River and the city. Another hotel on the same site is planned for a later phase.
At the other end of River Street, Richard Kessler “has a grand vision”. The site of a Georgia Power plant since 1913 and its more industrial addition in 1962, the Kessler Collection will preserve the structure adapting it for reuse as a boutique hotel. The 160-room Grand Bohemian at Historic Power Plant is just one piece of the project, along with a café, a restaurant and bar, a 3,500-seat ballroom, a 3,000-square-foot art gallery and other upscale retail.
“Kessler proposes to build a combination exhibition hall/parking garage to the west of the power plant along the riverfront. The cleared lot east of the power plant, which once was home to the transformer farm, initially will be converted to a grassed plaza and reserved for future development”, according to Adam Van Brimmer of Business In Savannah.
Richard Kessler, with Reese-Vanderbilt Associates architects, successfully created the magnificent Mansion on Forsyth Park and the striking Bohemian on River Street hotels in Savannah. “Whatever he puts his name [on] to turns out to be something of beauty,” Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson said.
